UNREFINED or REFINED? Both have specific properties that make them suitable for different body care purposes. Raw, unrefined shea butter has a distinctive (some say unpleasant, but certainly unusual compared to factory creams) smoky-nutty scent and is a very fatty base ingredient for creams and soaps, known as super fat. It can also be used to make hair care masks. It is slightly more difficult to absorb, but provides long-lasting care, repairing dry skin and reddened baby bottoms in 1-2 days. Refined shea butter undergoes a chemical and physical process that preserves most of its beneficial properties, but significantly reduces its strong shea scent and slightly increases its water content, making it more moisturising and slightly easier for the skin to absorb. It is one of the best base fats for soap due to its properties, and it is also cheaper than its raw counterpart.
Due to its natural latex content, it may cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to latex!
